Effect of Maleic Hydrazide on Sprout Inhibition and Metabolism of Garlic Bulbs

Abstract

|
Effects of various concentrations of MH on sprout inhibition and metabolism of garlic bulbs were investigated with Eusung variety. Sprout growth was sufficiently inhibited by all concentrations of MH ranging from 1000 to 4000ppm, however, decay was only decreased by 2000ppm MH treatment.
MH treatments greatly reduced the weight loss of garlic bulbs during storage. It was shown that weight loss was governed by the degree of sprout growth, and moisture content of garlic bulbs was inversely related to sprout growth.
No consistent tendency was shown in patterns of seasonal variation of tissue components in garlic bulbs during storage. Invertase activity was somewhat suppressed in MH treated bulb tissue.
